The Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) was supported to build-up their competence as proficiency testing provider (PT-organizer) for the geo and mining sector of Mongolia in order to enhance and play an important role in the national and regional quality infrastructure. Already established Know-how by the previous BGR project on “Certification of Reference Materials” provided a solid basis that was used together with further training for the assessment of proficiency tests for the quality assurance (proficiency-Testing/PT). The national Mongolian Metrological Institute MASM also recognized the necessity for establishing a PT-organization and supports the CGL.
Goal of the project was to assist CGL to build-up the capacity to organize proficiency testing for the analytical quality control of analytical laboratories according to ISO 17043. The project timeframe was 2 years, with a financial budget of 105.000 Euro.
Within the German-Mongolian Technical Cooperation, the BGR supported the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) in Ulaanbaatar with four projects since 1997. During this fourth project the CGL, which is specialized on geology, mining and environmental analytics and operates with about 150 employees, received its third accreditation on the basis of standards of the International Standardization Organization (ISO). This triple accreditation is not only singular within the technical cooperation. With this the CGL enters an elite group within laboratory community of its technical area. Only 5 out of 800 organizations accredited by the US American accreditation organization ANSI/ASQ American National Accreditation Board (ANAB) are at the triple accreditation level.
Since 2005 the CGL first received the accreditation as testing laboratory, later in 2012 as producer of Certified Reference Materials and now in 2015 as proficiency testing provider for the quality control of analytical laboratories. Each accreditation guaranties an international quality standard as well as the international acceptance of results and products. Accreditations are an official prove of competence and will only be awarded after an ISO assessment of several days by an independent international accreditation organization.
Finalizing this third accreditation also concludes the long-term, very successful cooperation between the two German and Mongolian geo-expert organizations BGR and CGL, which has been standing on it’s own feet for quite some time already.
