Research

A comprehensive energy resources database contains data on fossil energy resources and renewable energies, in some cases going back to the 19th century. These data are constantly updated and form the basis for advising the Federal Government, the economy and the public, as well as for further studies.

Further focal points of the research activities are sedimentary basins and continental margins, where a wide range of natural resources can be found. With the societal goal of a comprehensive decarbonisation of the energy supply by 2045, energy carriers such as hydrogen are coming into focus in addition to natural gas as a bridging fuel. Fundamental knowledge of large-scale and long-term geological processes for the development of continental margins serves as the basis of raw material geological assessments. Various geological and geophysical data sets are integrated into interpretation systems and can thus be analysed in their spatial and temporal development.
